Beginning Ready Stance: Close Ready Stance Type “B”
Number of Movements: 37
Pattern Meaning: Toi-Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16th century) who was an authority on neo-Confucianism.
The 37 movements of this pattern refer to his birthplace on the 37th latitude and the diagram represents the Chinese character for “scholar”.

Hand Techniques
Basic Hand Techniques
- Upset thrust with the flat fingertip
- Side back strike with the back fist
- Side thrust with the twin elbow
- W-Shape (Mountain) block with the outer forearm
- Pushing block with the double inner forearm
- High thrust with the flat fingertip
- Pressing block with the x-fist
- Low guarding block with knife hands
Mid-Air Hand Technique
- Mid-air downward punch
From an L-stance, demonstrate a mid-air downward punch with the rear hand.
Pattern Specific Techniques
- Execute a pressing block with the x-fist while jumping to form an X-stance
- W-shape block in sitting stance*
*Demonstrate strong stances and effective usage of the outer forearm block using the elbow joint as a “pivot” point for twisting the forearms just prior to the block.

Basic Kicking Techniques

Skip Kicking
- Skip hooking kick – defensive
Consecutive Kicking
- Three (3) consecutive kicks – different directions
Demonstrate multiple kicks focused at different targets towards different directions using more advanced kicks.

Vertical Kicking
- Triple Kicking
– Lead leg; Rear leg and Stepping motions
Demonstrate vertical (triple) kicking focused at different targets towards using more advanced kicks.
Balance/Strength Training
Demonstrate a mid-air side front snap kick.
The practitioner shall land on the “non-kicking” leg while maintaining a side front snap kick extended and held as high as possible. Hold the “landed” kicking position for two (2) seconds and repeat using the other leg.

Competition Attendance
Tournament competition is a requirement at this level. Practitioners must compete in a minimum of one (1) event. While patterns or breaking competition is recommended, participation in sparring competition fully satisfies this requirement.

Red Belt – What Does It Mean
Red signifies danger, cautioning the practitioner to exercise control and warning opponents to stay away.
Nine (9) Point to Maintain During Patterns Demonstrations
- Accuracy; a pattern should begin and end on the same spot.
- Correct posture and facing should be maintained at all times.
- The muscles of the body should be tensed and relaxed at the proper moments.
- A pattern should be performed in rhythmic movements with an absence of stiffness.
- Moves should be accelerated or decelerated according to the instructions in the patterns definitions and encyclopedia.
- Each pattern should be perfected before going on tho the next pattern.
- Students should perform each move with realism.
- Attack and defense techniques should be equally distributed among left and right hands and feet.
